Youth Sport Uganda Leaders Celebrate Women’s Triumph at Homeless World Cup

Uganda’s captain at the 2025 Homeless World Cup, Viola Namuddu, has attributed the team’s historic win to determination and the support they received throughout the tournament.

“This is a dream come true for us and for Uganda. We came here determined to fight, and the support we received pushed us to believe that nothing is impossible,” she said after Uganda defeated Mexico 6–0 in the final.

YSU team leader Lorna Letasi praised the squad’s resilience and the broader impact of their achievement.

“These young women have shown the power of sport to inspire change. Beyond the results, they are role models for many vulnerable youth back home,” she said.

Letasi added, “We use sport as a tool to empower vulnerable young people, build communities, and create opportunities for personal growth. This win is proof that with the right support, our youth can shine on the world stage.”

Uganda, represented by Youth Sport Uganda, went unbeaten in the week-long tournament.

The team opened with a 9–1 win over Tanzania, then beat Switzerland 15–0, Egypt 10–3, Ireland 5–1, and Austria 9–1. In the semifinals, they overcame Romania 9–3 before defeating Mexico in the final.

The squad, led by Namuddu, included Eva Nagayi, Sharifa Kitali, Josephine Ndagire, Stella Namisango, Cissy Nakate, Shadia Nambasa, and Jemimah Twesigye, all of whom contributed to the team’s dominant run.

The Homeless World Cup, first held in 1999 and staged for the second time under FIFA’s official support, brings together teams from across the world to advocate for the end of homelessness through sport. Women’s competitions, introduced in 2008, have been held annually since 2010.
