African Women in Sports Summit 2025 Launched with Focus on Ending Gender-Based Violence

The Africa Women in Sports Initiative has announced the African Women in Sports Summit 2025, scheduled for November 26–28 at Hotel Africana in Kampala. This year’s summit will run under the theme “Mission to End Gender-Based Violence.”

Organizers say the three-day event will serve as a transformative platform aimed at safeguarding athletes, empowering women in sports, and pushing for inclusive and supportive sporting environments across the continent.

Speaking at the launch, Dr. Marriam Mpaata, President of the Africa Women in Sports Initiative, emphasized that the summit is designed to deliver concrete action. “This summit is not just about conversations but it aims to end the silence around gender-based violence in sports and drive concrete actions to create safer, fairer, and more empowering spaces for women and girls in the sporting arena,” she said.

The initiative has partnered with the Uganda Association of Women Lawyers (FIDA), in a move that signals stronger legal advocacy for female athletes facing abuse and discrimination.

The role of media and academia will also take center stage at the summit. Professor George Nyabuga of Aga Khan University in Kenya noted that these sectors are key in reshaping narratives and influencing public opinion on inclusivity, particularly where legal systems may be slow to respond.

The Kampala summit is expected to attract stakeholders from across Africa, including athletes, coaches, policymakers, and civil society, all committed to creating a safer and more equitable future for women in sport.
