Tashobya Challenges Young Table Tennis Stars to Build on Medal Success

National Council of Sports chairman Ambrose Tashobya has urged Uganda’s national table tennis team to aim higher after their strong showing at recent continental competitions.

The seven-player squad returned from Lagos, Nigeria with 13 medals — 4 gold, 4 silver and 5 bronze — across the U15 and U19 singles, doubles, and mixed doubles events at the Africa Hopes Week and Challenge, the ITTF African Youth Championship, and the ITTF Africa Youth Cup, held between July 20 and August 5.

Speaking at a press conference in Lugogo on Thursday, which included players, coaches, and officials from the Uganda Table Tennis Association, Tashobya praised the team’s progress but called for continued growth.

“These are young players who have performed very well and it gives us a lot of hope that the sport is growing,” he said. “We want to continue working with the federation and investing in the sport, especially in schools, to help players reach higher levels.”

Looking ahead, Joseph Sebatindira and Patience Anyango are set to represent Uganda at the World Hopes Week and Challenge scheduled for October 13–19 in Sheffield, UK.
