Uganda See Off Somalia to Stay in World Cup Qualification Race

Uganda Cranes maintained their push for a first-ever World Cup appearance with a 2-0 victory over Somalia in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier at Namboole Mandela National Stadium on Monday.

The hosts struck early when Allan Okello converted a fifth-minute penalty, settling nerves and setting the tone.

Forward Jude Ssemugabi doubled the lead in the 38th minute, reacting quickest to bury a rebound after Somalia failed to clear their lines.

Uganda controlled the contest from there, keeping the Ocean Stars at bay without serious threat.

The win lifts Uganda to 15 points in Group G, level with Mozambique, who beat Botswana 2-0 in Maputo.

Algeria remain top with 19 points following their goalless draw against Guinea, leaving the race for second place finely balanced with three rounds left.

Uganda will look to build on the result as they continue to fight for a playoff spot, with Rogers Mato and captain Khalid Aucho again central to their organization in midfield and attack despite not getting on the scoresheet this time.

For Somalia, who remain bottom with just one point, the defeat extended their winless run in the group but they held firm in the second half to avoid a heavier loss.
