The New York Yankees paid tribute to youth activist and political commentator Charlie Kirk with a moment of silence before their game against the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday.
The honor came just hours after Kirk, 31, was fatally shot in the neck during an event at Utah Valley University.
In a social media post, President Trump announced the death of the “Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk.” The President’s message praised Kirk’s connection with young people, stating, “No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us.”
President Trump also extended his sympathies to Kirk’s wife, Erika, and their two children.
The Yankees confirmed the tribute on their social media, writing, “Before tonight’s game we held a moment of silence in memoriam of Charlie Kirk.”
Kirk was the founder of the youth activist group “Turning Point USA” and had become a prominent figure on college campuses nationwide. He was a husband and a father of two.
