Former Kawempe South legislator Mubarak Munyagwa has urged FUFA president Moses Magogo to shelve plans for a three-round Uganda Premier League format, warning that rushing the changes could damage the competition.
Munyagwa said Magogo should “first leave politics and focus on sports” and test the new system in the FUFA Big League before considering it for the top flight.
“Magogo should not gamble with the league,” Munyagwa told NBS Sport. “Let him first send the format to the Big League. After a year, if it works, he can bring it to the Premier League.”
The remarks add to the debate sparked by FUFA’s decision to introduce a format that divides the 16-team league into groups across three rounds.
While Magogo argues the plan will create a more marketable product, some club leaders, including Vipers president Lawrence Mulindwa, have voiced strong opposition.
The 2025/26 season is set to start on September 26 under the new structure.
