Nasser and Katumba Chase Historic Africa Rally Crown in Tanzania

The Moil Rally crew of Yasin Nasser and Ali Katumba are on the brink of history as they aim to become Uganda’s first Africa Rally Championship (ARC) winners in more than 25 years.

The duo lead the standings after four rounds and head into this weekend’s decisive finale in Morogoro, Tanzania, with 114 points, eight clear of Kenya’s Samman Vohra and Drew Sturrock.

Co-driver Katumba believes this is their moment after several near misses. “The ARC has seen changes over the years with rounds in countries like Zambia, South Africa and Ivory Coast in the past, but the championship is mainly held in East Africa now, which has allowed us to test different terrains,” he said.

Buoyed by consistent form, the 2023 national rally champions have secured podium finishes in all four rounds so far—Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi—putting them firmly in control of the title race.

Katumba also underlined the significance of the continental crown. “It’s an achievement for every driver and co-driver to win the national championship, the Africa title and, if possible, compete and win the world championship. It’s a joy for anyone competing in our classes and category.”

The team received a formal send-off earlier this week from Milton Chebet, the National Council of Sports assistant general secretary in charge of technical affairs, who reaffirmed government support for motorsport development.

Uganda’s last ARC winners were Charles Muhangi and Steven Byaruhanga in 1999.
