Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet claimed her first-ever world title, winning the women’s 10,000m at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
The 25-year-old, who holds the world records for both the 5,000m and 10,000m, outsprinted defending champion Gudaf Tsegay to secure the gold medal.
“I was ready to die on the line because becoming a world champion is all that mattered,” Chebet told reporters.
Her victory sets the stage for a potential historic double, as she now aims to add the 5,000m title to her collection.
If successful, she would join Vivian Cheruiyot as the only other Kenyan woman to achieve the feat.
Chebet is set to face off against a strong field in the upcoming 5,000m final, including her rival Faith Kipyegon, whom she recently beat at the Paris Olympics.
