The SMACK League returns this Sunday with a new format designed to crank up the rivalries and sharpen competition.
Powered by Guinness, the eighth edition of the popular alumni football tournament kicks off September 28 at the IUEA Sports Grounds in Kansanga, Kampala, featuring all 22 teams in action from 9 a.m.
For the first time, the teams have been grouped by graduation years rather than random draws. Classes from the 1980s to 2009 make up Pool A, while those from 2010 to 2020 form Pool B. League executive David Kawooya said the new setup should create more intense matchups.
“We’re going to see a lot more derbies,” Kawooya explained. “You have classes that were just a year apart in school now facing off. That familiarity adds intensity. We expect tighter games and bigger competition.”
Opening day serves up a heavy schedule. Defending champions Alks (2007) launch their title defense against Block Owners (2002) in a key Pool A clash.
Two long-standing rivalries will also headline the day: Knights (2017) against Gladiators (2016) and Vikings (2014) against Cyclones (2013). In Pool B, debutants Spartans (2020) meet Pirates (2012) in a first test against seasoned opposition.
Fans can expect a festival atmosphere with music, food, and Guinness on tap.
“Guinness believes in the power of sport to connect people and build strong communities,” said Mercy Atwongyeire, Project Manager for Premium Beer at Uganda Breweries Limited. “This partnership is about reconnecting old friends, sharing memories, and creating new ones that last.”
With a fresh format and a full day of action, Season Eight promises the drama and camaraderie that have defined the SMACK League since its start.
