The historic San Siro stadium is set to be demolished after the Milan city council approved its sale to AC Milan and Inter Milan.
The city council’s approval, reached after a nearly 12-hour vote, was called a “historic and decisive step” by the two clubs.
The proposed sale of the 99-year-old ground and its surrounding area is valued at 197 million euros (£172m), though it still needs final government confirmation.
The San Siro, which hasn’t been significantly modernized since the 1990 World Cup, will be replaced by a new 71,500-capacity stadium.
This world-class facility is part of a joint urban regeneration project and is reportedly being fast-tracked for Euro 2032.
The clubs stated the new ground is “destined to become a new architectural icon for Milan.”
