Tolbert Onyango has stepped down from his position as head coach of the Uganda Men’s Rugby 7s national team, Uganda Rugby Union (URU) has announced Wednesday evening.
Onyango called time on his second stint as head coach after ten years.
He led Uganda through a period when the 7s national team was the goose which laid URU’s golden egg.

During this stint, Uganda won four Rugby Africa 7s champions (2016, 2017, 2022, 2024) and an African Games gold medal (2024).
The country also featured at two Rugby World Cups (2018 and 2022), multiple Commonwealth Games events, World Rugby 7s Challenger Series and the World Series as an invitational team, Olympic Games Repechages, the Safari 7s… to be mention but a few.
Onyango’s final trophy with the national team was the inaugural Kampala International 7s won at Kings Park this year.
His final tournament was the 2025 Rugby Africa Men’s 7s in Mauritius where Uganda finished fifth.
Onyango recently joined Heathens Rugby Club as the head coach, with whom he has already won a silver medal in the national 7s series and two Cup Finals
