State Minister for Sports Peter Ogwang has said the near-complete Hoima City Stadium will play a dual role as both a key venue for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations and a political milestone for President Yoweri Museveni as the country heads toward the 2026 General Elections.
Ogwang confirmed that the 20,000-seater facility, now at 95 percent completion, will be officially commissioned by President Museveni in December.
He described the stadium as a symbol of government’s investment in sports and regional infrastructure, while also noting its potential to consolidate political support for the president in Bunyoro and nationally.
“The Hoima City Stadium will be one of the president’s biggest achievements, and I believe it will translate into massive support for him in the coming elections,” Ogwang said.
Beyond politics, the minister stressed the project’s sporting significance.
He assured the public that the planned Akii Bua Olympic Stadium in Lira will be constructed to the same standards, further boosting Uganda’s capacity to host major events.
With the AFCON 2027 preparation deadline drawing closer, government officials say the priority is to deliver not just a tournament-ready venue, but also a lasting legacy for Ugandan sports.
