Manchester City defender Nico O’Reilly has received his first senior England call-up, stepping up from the Under-21s to replace the injured Reece James.
James, a right-back for Chelsea, withdrew from the squad after picking up a shin injury during the recent Premier League win against Liverpool.
O’Reilly, 20, is rewarded for his strong form at Manchester City, where he has become a versatile regular under Pep Guardiola.
He is primarily a left-back for his club, having been converted from a midfielder, and is praised for the physicality and powerful running that England manager Thomas Tuchel values.
The versatile defender joins the squad for the upcoming matches against Wales (Thursday, October 9) and Latvia (Tuesday, October 14).
His inclusion leaves Djed Spence as the only recognised right-back in the squad, despite O’Reilly being a natural left-sided player.
