Netherlands’ all-time leading goal-scorer, Memphis Depay, has missed the start of international duty after his passport was stolen in Brazil, where he plays for Corinthians.
Depay was scheduled to fly out Sunday to join the squad for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Malta on Thursday and Finland on Sunday.
The Dutch federation (KNVB) confirmed the forward is “doing everything he can” to travel “as soon as possible.”
Head coach Ronald Koeman called the situation “unfortunate,” stating: “You naturally want to start your international preparations with a full squad… We hope he can indeed travel to join us at the training camp as soon as possible.”
