Aciko Proud of Sommet’s Breakthrough Season Despite Semifinal Exit

Having reached the 2025 FUBA National Basketball League playoffs semifinals in their first top-flight season, Sommet Basketball Club head coach Albert Aciko believes the team is on the right path to greater success.

The side, renamed from Our Saviour at the start of the campaign to gain top-tier status, lost their decisive Game Five 79-70 against 10-time record champions City Oilers last month, wrapping up an impressive debut season.

Despite falling short of the finals, Aciko expressed pride in his team’s achievements.

“We had an amazing season as a club and did achieve our goal of finishing in the top four. We have lots of young and athletic players who are good at scoring,” he said.

In their maiden top-flight campaign, the Kansanga-based side finished second in the regular season before overcoming KCCA Panthers in the playoffs quarterfinals to reach the semifinals.

In the last-four clash, Sommet battled City Oilers in a thrilling five-game series that tested their mettle.

“We had an easy route going through KCCA because we set up well,” Aciko noted. “In the semifinals, we shocked City Oilers in Game One, they took Games Two and Three, and we bounced back in the exciting Game Four. Game Five was intense, but their depth and experience eventually got the better of us.”

Looking ahead, Aciko remains optimistic about Sommet’s future under club president Nasser Sserunjogi.

“We have to be intentional about developing players and recruiting better so we can achieve even more success,” he said.

Sommet lost 70-60 to UCU Canons in the third-place playoff match played last evening. The National Basketball League playoffs are broadcast live on NBS Sport and Afromobile.
