The Uganda Men’s National Basketball Team, also known as the Silverbacks, has revealed its squad for the 2025 AfroBasket Qualifiers. The team consists of 13 players who will represent Uganda in the first round of the qualifiers starting on Friday, September 23 in Tunisia.
The squad is a mix of seven players who play in Uganda and five professionals. Notable inclusions are Edgar Munaba from KIU Titans and Joel Kayiira from UCU Canons, both seeking their national team debuts after performing well in the National Basketball League.
Fayeed Baale and Titus Odeke, who have progressed from UCU Canons to City Oilers, are also part of the team, solidifying their positions on the National Team sheet.
Ivan Muhwezi has been chosen as a direct replacement for Jimmy Enabu in the team.
Despite a recent knee injury keeping him off the court, Ishmail Wainright, who plays internationally, brings valuable knowledge and experience to support the team. He plays for the Portland Trail Blazers of the National Basketball Association.
The team was selected by Mandy Juruni who recently left city Oilers to take on a new challenge.
Uganda finds itself in Group B, facing tough competition against Cape Verde, Nigeria, and Morocco in the AfroBasket Qualifiers. The 20-team AfroBasket Qualifiers will take place over three qualifying windows in February and November 2024 and it will conclude in February 2025.
16 out of 20 countries will qualify to the 2025 FIBA AfroBasket.
