Uganda’s 63rd Independence Day carries double significance today, Thursday, October 9, as the national football team, the Uganda Cranes, take on Botswana in a decisive 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier at 7 pm EAT in Francistown.

The Cranes are seeking a win that would lift national spirits and keep their World Cup dream alive.

Uganda sit second in Group G with 15 points, four behind Algeria, who face bottom-placed Somalia at the same time.

Algeria’s victory would seal their qualification, but a slip coupled with a Uganda win would cut the gap to one point, setting up a potentially decisive clash in Algiers on October 14.

Head coach Paul Put’s squad is at full strength, with all 26 summoned players available. The team arrived safely at PG Matante International Airport in Francistown on Wednesday before holding their final training session at Obedi Itani Chilume Stadium in the evening.

Veteran goalkeeper Denis Onyango believes the team’s recent form gives them confidence heading into the tie.

He noted that back-to-back clean sheets at home have built momentum, adding that the group remains determined to extend that run on the road.

Captain Khalid Aucho emphasized the importance of belief and unity in the final stretch of qualifiers. He said the team remains focused on getting results that can either secure direct qualification or at least reach the playoff stage.

Defender Toby Sibbick called on his teammates to maintain their fight until the last whistle. He said the team aims to win both remaining games to stay in contention, adding that the players still believe in the possibility of topping the group.

Uganda last faced Botswana in a competitive fixture during the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, winning away from home.

A repeat result tonight would mark a fitting Independence Day gift for Ugandans and keep the nation’s World Cup hopes alive.
