Group C World Cup Race Goes to the Wire After Nigeria’s Tense Win

The battle for the 2026 FIFA World Cup automatic qualification from CAF Group C is heading to a dramatic climax after Nigeria secured a vital, albeit nervous, 2-1 victory over Lesotho.

Captain William Troost-Ekong’s penalty (55′) and a strike from debutant Akor Adams (80′) ensured the three points for the Super Eagles, despite a late scare from Lesotho’s Hlompho Kalake (83′).

Crucially, group leaders Benin held onto their advantage with a 1-0 win against Rwanda. Meanwhile, South Africa’s hopes were damaged by a frustrating 0-0 home draw against 10-man Zimbabwe.

Only the group winner qualifies automatically. The final matchday will see Nigeria face Benin, while South Africa plays Rwanda.

To leapfrog Benin, the Super Eagles must defeat their rivals by a two-goal margin in Uyo on Tuesday.

South Africa could still take the top spot if they win and the derby in Uyo results in a draw or a narrow Nigerian victory.
