Rugby Cranes, Walukuba Hold Wooden Spoons in Safari 7s Pool Phase

Uganda’s male representatives at the 2025 Safari 7s in Nairobi, Kenya have endured a torrid opening round.

Having had their first matches on Day One (Friday night) rescheduled due to floodlights failure at the Nyayo National Stadium, Uganda Men’s 7s national team and the current national 7s series champions Walukuba Barbarians, began their campaigns early on Day Two (Saturday morning).

Both teams lost all their matches in the pool phase, finishing rock bottom of their respective tables.

Walukuba Barbarians (Pool A) Results:
• Round One: Kenya Shujaa 55-00 Walukuba
• Round Two: UK Select 41-26 Walukuba
• Round Three: French Renegades 38-21 Walukuba

Uganda Men’s 7s (Pool B) Results:
• Round One: Nyati 24-14 Uganda
• Round Two: KCB 40-14 Uganda
• Round Three: Shogun 35-14 Uganda

This means neither qualified for the Main Cup knockout round and will not compete for the iconic Robin Cahill Trophy, if they had such plans to start with. Instead, they will battle in the Challenge Trophy semifinals for a highest-possible ninth-place finish.

Men’s Challenge Trophy Fixtures (Day Three – Sunday):
• SF1 – 10.56 a.m.: Reunion vs Walukuba
• SF2 – 11.18 a.m.: Apache vs Uganda

On the other hand, Uganda Women’s 7s national team beat Belgium and Tunisia but lost to defending champions Kenya Lionesses in their round-robin matches played on Friday and Saturday.

Uganda Women’s (Pool B) Results:
• Round One: Uganda 12-10 Belgium
• Round Two: Uganda 34-12 Tunisia
• Round Three: Kenya Lionesses 17-05 Uganda

Uganda will face Kenya Cubs in the second Main Cup Quarterfinals on Sunday morning.

Women’s Main Cup Quarterfinal Fixture (Day Three – Sunday):
• QF2 – 8.22 a.m.: Uganda vs Kenya Cubs

The winners of this 27th edition of the Safari 7s will be crowned after the Cup Finals on Sunday evening.
