The Swedish Football Association (SvFF) has sacked head coach Jon Dahl Tomasson, stating the men’s national team has “not delivered the results we hoped for” and leaving their World Cup qualification hopes hanging by a thread.
The decision follows a disastrous 1-0 loss to Kosovo, which culminated in a furious display of dissent from Newcastle United winger Anthony Elanga.
Moments after the loss, radio reporters heard an enraged Elanga, who was benched for the match, shout: “The f**** system has to go!**”
The explosive outburst publicly questioned Tomasson’s tactics and confirmed reports of unrest within the squad.
SvFF director Simon Astrom confirmed the split, stating new leadership was required to maximize the team’s chance for a playoff spot in March.
“Football is results-based and we have reached a point where results are not enough,” Astrom said.
The turmoil was compounded by former Newcastle star Alexander Isak’s recent lack of fitness and form, which was attributed to an earlier strike, further contributing to the coach’s demise.
