Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice to set a new record for World Cup qualifying goals (41), but Portugal was held to a dramatic 2-2 draw by Hungary on Tuesday, missing an immediate chance to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
In a thrilling Group F match at the Estádio José Alvalade, Hungary took an early lead through Attila Szalai (8′).
Ronaldo quickly responded, levelling the score in the 22nd minute before putting Portugal ahead just before half-time (45’+3).
The result seemed secure until the 91st minute, when Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai netted a dramatic equaliser for Hungary, keeping their group hopes alive.
Portugal, while disappointed, still maintains a five-point lead at the top of Group F with two games remaining. Ronaldo, now 40, has scored 948 career goals and 143 for Portugal.
