Uganda Cranes Player Ratings After 2-1 Loss to Algeria

Uganda’s hopes of reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup came to a heartbreaking end after falling 2-1 to Algeria in their final qualifying match in Algiers.

Steven Mukwala gave the Cranes a dream start with an early strike, but two late penalties converted by Mohamed Amoura turned the tide in favour of the Desert Foxes.

Here’s how each Ugandan player fared on a night that mixed courage with disappointment.

Jamal Salim Magoola – 7/10
The goalkeeper produced a string of fine saves to keep Uganda’s lead intact for much of the game. He could do little about Amoura’s spot-kick and was unfortunate to concede the second after clashing with Gouiri. Forced off on a stretcher after a brave performance.

Tobby Sibbick – 5/10
Endured a difficult evening as Algeria’s pace and trickery down the flank put him under constant pressure. It was a stern test of his defensive credentials in Cranes colours, and while he struggled at times, it was far from a disastrous outing.

Jordan Obita – 6/10
Spent most of the game duelling with Amine Gouiri and stood up well to the challenge. He showed determination and awareness, snuffing out danger when needed, though he was occasionally overrun in the later stages.

Elio Capradossi – 6/10
Solid for large spells and made several crucial interventions as Algeria piled on pressure. However, as the hosts increased their tempo late on, the centre-back found himself overworked and stretched.

Aziz Kayondo – 7/10
Another standout performance from Uganda’s most dependable player. Kept Riyad Mahrez quiet for long periods, often forcing the Algerian captain to retreat. His energy and positional sense once again underlined his growing reputation.

Khalid Aucho – 6/10
Led by example, throwing himself into challenges and breaking up Algeria’s rhythm whenever possible. The skipper’s commitment was unquestionable, even as his side began to tire in the closing minutes.

Kenneth Semakula – 6/10
Disciplined and intelligent in his movement. Broke up several Algerian moves and initiated Uganda’s best attack of the night with a clever pass that led to Mukwala’s goal.

Allan Okello – 6/10
Found it tough against Algeria’s physical midfield. Managed a few bright moments and tested the goalkeeper with some half-chances, particularly in the first half.

Rogers Mato – 5/10
Put in a shift defensively, tracking back tirelessly to support his full-back. However, his attacking spark was missing, and a rare opportunity in the second half was well-blocked.

Steven Mukwala – 6/10
Finally got his long-awaited World Cup qualifying goal with a sharp early finish. Worked tirelessly across the front line, chasing lost causes and pressing high, but service to him dried up as the game wore on.

Jude Ssemugabi – 5/10
Missed a good chance to double Uganda’s lead in the first half. His work rate was impressive, but he’ll rue that missed opportunity on what could have been a famous night.

Substitutes

Denis Omedi – 3/10
Struggled to make an impact and was fortunate to avoid a red card after an off-the-ball incident at the end of the game.

Joseph Mpande – 4/10
Came on late but barely saw the ball as Algeria dominated possession in the dying minutes.

Travis Mutyaba – 5/10
Showed flashes of his dribbling ability and creativity but had little time to stamp his authority on the game.

Ikpeazu Mubiru – 4/10
Offered physical presence after replacing Mato, though the flow of the match limited his involvement.
