Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has confirmed that Enzo Fernandez is a doubt for Wednesday’s Champions League match against Ajax due to a knee problem.
The midfielder, who returned early from Argentina duty with an “inflammation of the knee,” missed Saturday’s 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest.
Maresca stated, “Enzo had small problems… a small problem that at the moment we are not able to say if he can be available for Ajax or not.”
Maresca also explained the omission of fully-fit centre-back Wesley Fofana from the Forest squad, despite his recovery from a recent concussion.
The manager confirmed Fofana’s absence was a precautionary measure, saying, “Wes, it’s just a way to try to protect him a little bit… He will be available for Ajax.”
Fofana is expected to be an option for the midweek European tie at Stamford Bridge.
