Morocco Crowned FIFA U20 World Champions After Stunning Argentina

Morocco have won the FIFA U20 World Cup for the first time, defeating Argentina 2-0 in the final at the Estadio Nacional Julio Martinez Prádanos in Santiago, Chile.

The Atlas Cubs capped off a historic campaign with a disciplined and fearless display that sealed Africa’s first world youth title since Ghana’s triumph in 2009.

Yassir Zabiri was the hero of the night, scoring both goals to secure Morocco’s place in football history.

The 19-year-old midfielder struck in the 12th minute with a curling free-kick that beat Argentine goalkeeper Santino Barbi, before adding a second in the 28th minute after being set up by Othmane Maamma.

Argentina dominated possession, holding 71 percent of the ball, but Morocco’s defensive organisation and composure denied them any breakthrough.

Every attack met resistance, with Morocco’s backline clearing danger and goalkeeper Ayoub Lamsahel pulling off vital saves. Argentina’s attempts to find a lifeline through VAR reviews and set pieces came to nothing.

In the second half, Morocco protected their lead with tactical discipline. Coach Mohamed Ouahbi made calculated substitutions to reinforce the midfield and defence, frustrating the South Americans who missed several chances and lost control of the game.

The victory completed a remarkable journey for Morocco, who stunned Spain and Brazil in the group stage before knocking out South Korea, the United States, and France on their way to the final.

Zabiri finished the tournament with five goals, having scored against Spain, Brazil, South Korea, and twice in the final.

His performances earned him the man of the match award and cemented his reputation as one of Africa’s brightest young talents.

Former Morocco youth international Yassine Zouchou had earlier tipped the team to make history, citing their spirit and tactical maturity.

His belief proved right as the country became the first North African side and the third African nation to reach and win the U20 World Cup final.

For Argentina, it was a rare disappointment. Seeking a record-extending seventh title, they were undone by Morocco’s efficiency and defensive resilience.
