Ssenyondo Staying Positive as Uganda Cubs Seek Improvement After Panama Defeat

Uganda U17 head coach Brian Ssenyondo says his team’s Dubai camp has been a vital learning experience ahead of their debut at the 2025 FIFA U17 World Cup in Qatar.

Speaking after the Cubs’ 3–2 defeat to Paraguay in their final friendly on Tuesday night, Ssenyondo said the team has gained valuable exposure and confidence from playing against top opposition.

“I am thankful that we have had this camp, so I want to thank the Federation for this initiative as it has given us a real picture of what we are going to find in the World Cup,” Ssenyondo said. “When you see the teams we have played, they come from the same region as our group opponents Canada and Chile, so this means a lot.”

Ssenyondo praised his players for their attacking intent, noting that Uganda scored first in all three of their friendlies — against Venezuela, Panama, and Paraguay — but pointed out the need for sharper defending and better game management.

“The good thing is that in all three games we have scored first, which shows our attacking potential,” he explained. “What we need to improve is defending and game management. I believe by the time we play our first match in Qatar, everything will be in place.”

The Cubs’ Dubai tour ended with one draw and two narrow defeats: 1–1 against Venezuela, 1–2 to Panama, and 2–3 to Paraguay. Despite not picking up a win, Ssenyondo said the performances showed progress and resilience.

Uganda will feature in Group K at the World Cup alongside Canada, Chile, and France, beginning their campaign on November 5 against Canada.
