Dallas Mavericks guard Brandon Williams publicly apologized for “being a distraction” after he was arrested on a charge of marijuana possession at Dallas Fort Worth Airport over the weekend.
Williams missed two games after less than two ounces of marijuana—illegal for recreational use in Texas—were found in his luggage.
Despite the incident, Williams immediately delivered on the court, scoring 20 points and grabbing seven rebounds off the bench in the Mavericks’ tight 107-105 victory against the Indiana Pacers upon his return.
“I just want to apologise for just being a distraction. I want to take full accountability,” Williams said, referencing the arrest, which came despite the NBA having stopped testing for marijuana in 2023.
In other games, the Chicago Bulls remain perfect, moving to 4-0 after a 126-113 win against the Sacramento Kings, led by Matas Buzelis’s 27 points.
In Minneapolis, the Los Angeles Lakers secured a dramatic 116-115 win against the Minnesota Timberwolves, thanks to an Austin Reaves buzzer-beater and his 28-point, 16-assist performance in the absence of LeBron James and Luka Doncic.
Elsewhere, the Memphis Grizzlies consigned the Phoenix Suns to their fourth successive loss, while the New Orleans Pelicans remain the only team in the Western Conference yet to win.
