Steven Gerrard has confirmed he was “very close” to returning as Rangers manager but ultimately withdrew, stating the conditions were “not perfect.”
The former Ibrox boss, who led Rangers to the 2020-21 Scottish title, held “positive and interesting talks” with the club following Russell Martin’s recent dismissal.
However, Gerrard opted out, citing a lack of preparation and concerns over the timing, particularly with his family still based in Bahrain.
Gerrard admitted his “heart was 100% there,” but felt the process was “a bit rushed” and required a decision on short notice.
While he didn’t directly criticize the new structure under sporting director Kevin Thelwell, he emphasized that for such a major challenge, “it had to be perfect and I had to be 100% ready.”
He concluded by expressing hope that the opportunity might “come again” when he is better prepared.
