Chelsea have strongly condemned alleged racist abuse directed at their academy players by a Qarabag supporter during a Uefa Youth League match in Baku on Wednesday.
The incident occurred after 17-year-old striker Sol Gordon scored in the 57th minute. As he celebrated, at least one fan ran down and directed “monkey gestures” at the players, according to eyewitnesses.
The match at the Azersun Stadium was briefly stopped as players and staff, including Head Coach Calum McFarlane, complained to the referee. Despite the disruption, Chelsea continued and won the match 5-0.
Chelsea stated that “Racism and all forms of discriminatory behaviour are completely unacceptable” and confirmed they have raised the incident immediately with the Uefa match delegate and the home club, demanding a full investigation under Uefa’s disciplinary procedures.
A Qarabag spokesperson issued a quick “sorry,” stating the behavior “doesn’t represent the values of the club” and promised a thorough investigation.
Uefa’s disciplinary body will review the referee’s report before taking further action.
