Uganda’s Alfred Ojok, better known by his ring name “Gorilla,” has made a strong statement at the ongoing Islamic Solidarity Games in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, after storming into the semifinals of the middleweight division.
Ojok defeated Iran’s Mohammad Nourani in Saturday’s quarterfinal bout at the Promenade Art Tower, guaranteeing himself at least a bronze medal — Uganda’s first in boxing at the Games.
The win marks a breakthrough moment for the Ugandan team, with Ojok setting the pace for his compatriots in the competition.
Speaking after his victory, Ojok praised the Uganda Boxing Federation for its role in preparing the team, saying the guidance from coaches and administrators has been key to his performance.
“This medal is for Uganda,” he said. “The hard work from our coaches and the Federation’s support gave me the confidence to deliver.”
Ojok now turns his focus to the semifinals, where he will look to extend his impressive run and push for a shot at gold.
