The Spanish Football Association (RFEF) released Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal from the national squad after he underwent an invasive groin procedure on Monday, the same day the training camp began, without RFEF medical staff being notified.
Spain manager Luis de la Fuente expressed “surprise and concern,” stating he had never experienced such a situation where he was told about a serious health matter only after the procedure took place.
Yamal, 18, underwent a radiofrequency procedure to treat pubic discomfort.
The RFEF stated it only learned of the procedure hours after it was performed and received the 7–10 days rest recommendation late that night. Barcelona sources maintain their medical team is in constant communication with the RFEF.
This incident further strains relations between the RFEF and Barcelona, following previous disputes over Yamal’s fitness during recent international breaks.
The Euro 2024 champions have called up Jorge de Frutos to replace Yamal for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Georgia and Turkey.
