Cheptegei Turns Running Success into Shs26 Billion Hotel Investment in Kapchorwa

Olympic champion Joshua Cheptegei has revealed that the new hotel recently commissioned by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni in Kapchorwa District is being fully funded from his own career savings, marking one of the most ambitious athlete-led investments in Uganda.

Cheptegei, one of the world’s most decorated long-distance runners, said the project—valued at Shs26 billion—is a product of years of disciplined saving from his international competitions.

The hotel, now under construction, is part of his effort to give back to his home region and create sustainable opportunities beyond the track.

“This project is from the savings I have been earning. I first bought land in 2017 and added on to it gradually. The first phase alone will take Shs13 billion,” Cheptegei said during the commissioning. “Already, over 100 people are working on the project, and once complete, it will create more than 400 jobs.”

President Museveni, who officiated at the ceremony, praised Cheptegei for investing his money wisely and choosing to build in Uganda instead of spending his wealth abroad.

“We are going to support him. In principle, we support manufacturers and hoteliers, so we shall support him too. The policy is already there,” the President said.

Cheptegei explained that the investment aligns with his broader vision of promoting tourism in Sebei, providing jobs for locals, and contributing to national development. He also credited government support for enabling Ugandan athletes to thrive internationally.

“We have been able to achieve a lot because of your support, Your Excellency,” Cheptegei said, adding that his decision to channel his earnings into long-term ventures is part of his plan to secure the future of Ugandan sport and inspire the next generation of athletes.
