The Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games (July 14-30) are set to begin with an immediate focus on track, as organisers announced a schedule placing the women’s 100m final on Day One (July 14) and the men’s 100m final on Day Two.
World Athletics president Lord Coe said the plan was designed to “maximise and sustain global interest.”
British sprinter Dina Asher-Smith called the Day One placement “an honour,” celebrating the legacy of women’s sprinting 100 years after their Olympic track debut.
In a “historic swap,” athletics will now dominate the first week at the LA Memorial Coliseum, while swimming moves to the second week, taking place at the SoFi Stadium (the opening ceremony venue).
The first medal event will be the women’s triathlon.
LA28 is confirmed to be the biggest Games yet, featuring 36 sports and a record number of female Olympians, with 50.5% of the total athlete quota allocated to women.
The schedule also includes a major ‘Super Saturday’ on July 29, featuring 26 finals across 23 sports.
