U17 WORLD CUP: Defiant Uganda Cubs Floor Senegal to Seal Historic Round of 16 Berth

Uganda’s U17 national side has authored yet another golden chapter in its World Cup fairytale, eliminating continental giants Senegal with a gritty 1–0 victory to storm into the Round of 16 at the 2025 FIFA U17 World Cup in Qatar.

Played on the sun-baked turf of Aspire Zone’s Pitch 7, the match was decided by a flash of pure class from Abubakali Walusimbi, whose name will now echo in Ugandan football folklore.

The breakthrough came just a quarter-hour in. Midfield maestro Brian Ijara showed brilliant tenacity to reclaim possession, quickly linking up with skipper Hamuza Ssengooba.

The captain, composed and alert, threaded a delicate pass into Walusimbi’s stride. One touch to settle, one swing of the boot, and the ball was buried low into the corner. A finish born of confidence, precision, and nerve.

Still buoyed by their sensational group-stage win over France, Uganda entered the contest with belief, not fear. They pressed intelligently, kept the ball with purpose, and forced Senegal to chase shadows in the early exchanges.

But Senegal, true to pedigree, grew into the game. They pressed forward, searching for parity. Yet each time they drew breath, they found Edrisah Waibi waiting.

The Ugandan goalkeeper was simply immense, commanding his box, smothering danger, and producing saves that defied logic.

Late drama threatened to tilt the balance. A Senegal penalty appeal was overturned after VAR review, followed moments later by a would-be equalizer correctly flagged offside. The margins were thin, but the Cubs’ resolve was thicker.

When the final whistle blew, Uganda had done more than just win. They had stood firm. They had matched power with courage. And they had shown that their run is no fluke, it’s a statement.

The Cubs now await the winner between Germany and Burkina Faso, with a nation behind them and a dream still burning bright.

Uganda didn’t just survive. They conquered. And they march on.
