Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim harshly criticised his squad after they suffered a stunning 1-0 defeat at home to Everton, who played with 10 men for 77 minutes following an early red card for Idrissa Gueye.
The loss, secured by a Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall goal, marks the first time United has ever lost a Premier League match at Old Trafford against an opponent reduced to ten men.
Amorim, whose side sits 10th in the table, said the result proves his team is “far from perfection” and “not even near the point we should be to fight for the best positions.”
“We need to be perfect to win games. We were not perfect today,” he stated, adding that the players “toiled” and made numerous errors despite the man advantage.
In a frustrated call for more passion, Amorim controversially said he hopes his own players will “fight each other” when they lose the ball, referencing the spat between Everton players that led to the sending off.
The manager concluded by expressing fear of “returning of this feeling of last season,” signaling a crisis of confidence after the latest setback in their push for the top four.
