Estudiantes president Juan Sebastian Verón has been suspended for six months by the Argentina Football Association (AFA) after he refused to form a guard of honour for new champions Rosario Central.
Verón and his players were protesting a controversial AFA rule change made last week that named Rosario Central ‘League Champion’ based on combined regular season points—a status that previously only earned a Copa Libertadores spot.
During the Clausura knockout match on Sunday, Estudiantes players turned their backs on the Rosario team.
The former Manchester United midfielder was handed a “six-month suspension from all football-related activities,” while the protesting players received a two-match ban for next season.
Estudiantes went on to win the match 1-0.
