African Women in Sports Summit Ends With High Energy Sports Day in Lugogo

The 2025 African Women in Sports Initiative Summit closed today with a lively sports day at MTN Omondi Stadium in Lugogo, bringing two days of discussion to an energetic finish.

More than 300 women from across the continent took part in the summit, which focused on strengthening gender equality and tackling gender based violence within sports.

After a full programme of panels and solution driven conversations, the final day shifted the focus to activity on the field.

Delegates joined in basketball, football, athletics, netball, and tug of war, turning the venue into a busy showcase of participation and teamwork.

A friendly football match for women aged 50 and above stood out as the event’s signature moment. The game was designed to challenge long held stereotypes and reinforce the idea that sport belongs to every generation.

It also carried a cultural message, addressing beliefs in some communities, including parts of Kenya, where football is still viewed as a male domain.

Team Kenya won a close contest against Team Uganda, drawing loud support from fellow participants. The match reflected the summit’s wider goal of breaking barriers and encouraging more inclusive spaces in African sport.

The closing ceremony left delegates with a clear sense of purpose as they committed to push for safer and more equitable environments for women across the sector.
