The Super Eagles have received a major defensive boost just weeks before the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Blackburn Rovers defender Ryan Alebiosu (23) has been officially cleared to represent Nigeria, stepping in as the crucial replacement for injured first-choice right-back Ola Aina.
Aina is ruled out until early 2026 following surgery, compounding a defensive shortage that also saw cover option Benjamin Fredrick sidelined.
Coach Eric Chelle’s preparations were further unsettled by unconfirmed suggestions that captain William Troost-Ekong may retire from international duty.
Alebiosu, who spent 13 years at Arsenal and has shone in the Championship this season, offers the “dynamic, modern full-back” profile Chelle requires, bringing mobility and strong attacking and defensive qualities.
He is expected to be named in the final AFCON squad, which will be announced soon.
