Nigeria captain William Troost-Ekong has announced his immediate retirement from international football, concluding a distinguished decade with the Super Eagles.
The 31-year-old defender’s decision comes just weeks before the 2025 TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Troost-Ekong confirmed his final appearance was the 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff defeat to DR Congo.
In an emotional social media statement, he said he had “lived my dream,” reflecting on his 83 caps, five major tournaments, and the privilege of captaining the nation.
The center-back was a vital part of the “Oyibo Wall” alongside Leon Balogun. His international highlights include:
Bronze medals at the Rio 2016 Olympics and the 2019 AFCON.
Captain of the team that reached the 2023 AFCON final, where he was named Player of the Tournament.
He stated he is “at peace” with his decision and hopes his journey inspires the next generation.
Troost-Ekong vowed to remain involved with Nigerian football, though not in an active playing capacity.
