Kigulu County have strengthened their place at the top of the MTN Busoga Masaza Cup after a tight 1 to 0 win over Luuka in the final at Kyabazinga Stadium in Bugembe.
The result delivers their third championship and confirms them as the most successful side in the tournament’s eight editions.
The game was decided in the second half when Isaba Buruhani finished a well worked move from the right wing, a strike that sent the Kigulu fans into loud celebration. Head coach Kibuuka Eddy said the squad understood the weight of the match and delivered when it mattered.
“This victory is very special for us. We knew what this trophy meant to the people of Kigulu, and the boys gave everything on the pitch,” he said. “The discipline, the unity and the hunger to win made the difference today.”
Buruhani said scoring the winner in such a historic moment was a major personal milestone. “Scoring in a final like this is a dream. I am very happy to help my team win again, but this moment just pushes me to work even harder in training and in future matches,” he said.
The triumph pushes Kigulu ahead of Butembe and Busiiki, who have each won the title twice. Kigulu were already the only county to defend the trophy successfully after winning in 2018 and 2019. Their latest success now puts them alone at the top with three.
The final wrapped up a strong 8th edition of the tournament, which continues to grow in size and support across the Busoga sub region. The competition once again highlighted local talent and drew large crowds throughout the campaign.
Earlier in the day, Bugabula won bronze after edging Bukooli Namayingo 1 to 0 in the third place playoff.
The goal came from Kazindula Majid Musisi, who said the result was important for the county. “I am proud to score for Bugabula in such an important match. Winning bronze means a lot for our county and our supporters,” he said.
