What is AFCON 2025 and What is Different This Time?

AFCON 2025 is shaping up to be one of the most unusual editions in the history of the tournament.

It arrives at the end of the year, it falls during the festive season and it brings football fans a month of action at a time when most leagues are heading into a break.

Morocco is hosting, and the country has invested heavily in turning this event into a showcase of modern African football.

With 24 teams coming in and pressure building on the hosts, this edition carries both excitement and expectation.

Q: What exactly is AFCON 2025?

A: It is the 35th Africa Cup of Nations, the biggest football tournament for national teams on the continent.

It features 24 teams all aiming to lift the most respected trophy in African football. Fans follow it closely because it brings together old powerhouses, rising nations and some of the continent’s top stars.

Q: When will AFCON 2025 take place?

A: It runs from 21 December 2025 to 18 January 2026. The opening match is Morocco against Comoros in Rabat at 19:00 GMT, marking the start of a busy holiday period filled with football.

Q: Why is this edition being held during Christmas and New Year?

A: Morocco experiences its most comfortable temperatures in December and January.

This timing also fits with the international calendar and allows the hosts to optimise the weather conditions for fans and players. It is the first time the tournament will be held during the festive season.

Q: Why does Morocco hosting matter?

A: The hosts have developed some of the best stadiums and training facilities in Africa.

They are also preparing to co host the 2030 World Cup, so AFCON is a major test of their readiness. Fans are expecting an organised event with huge home support.

Q: What is at stake for the host nation?

A: Morocco is Africa’s highest ranked team and has not won AFCON since 1976.

Playing at home adds pressure, but it also fuels belief among supporters who see this as the perfect chance to end the long wait for a second title.
