With six groups and 24 teams, the opening round offers a steady run of games that fills the entire holiday period and gives fans plenty to enjoy.

The group draw has already set up several heavyweight matchups and regional rivalries that will shape the drama of the tournament.

Q: How are the 24 teams arranged for AFCON 2025?

A: They are placed into six groups of four. Each team plays three matches. The results determine who moves on.

The format is designed to give strong sides a chance to show consistency while giving less established teams space to fight for shock wins.

Q: What are the official groups?

A:
Group A has Morocco, Mali, Zambia and Comoros.
Group B has Egypt, South Africa, Angola and Zimbabwe.
Group C has Nigeria, Tunisia, Uganda and Tanzania.
Group D features Senegal, DR Congo, Benin and Botswana.
Group E has Algeria, Burkina Faso, Equatorial Guinea and Sudan.
Group F includes Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Gabon and Mozambique.

Q: How does a team advance from the group stage?

A: The top two teams in each group qualify for the round of sixteen. After that, the four best third placed teams across the six groups also progress.

This gives teams more room to recover from a slow start, which often leads to competitive final matchdays.

Q: Why is this group stage drawing so much attention?

A: Several groups contain major clashes. Ivory Coast meeting Cameroon in Group F is huge. Egypt against South Africa in Group B will be followed closely. Uganda and Tanzania in Group C brings regional pride to the picture. The lineup gives fans reasons to stay tuned every day.

Q: Why does the group stage matter so much?

A: Teams that find rhythm early often go deep into the tournament. The group stage also sets the tone for star players who want to make an impact.
