EAC Inter-Parliamentary Games: Athletics Day Underway at Namboole

Uganda has extended its lead at the 15th East African Inter Parliamentary Games and remains in a strong position to defend its 2025 overall crown.

The hosts have posted top results across most completed disciplines, pulling ahead of the closest challengers, Kenya, as the regional championship enters its final stretch.

Team Uganda has excelled in key sports, including women’s volleyball, basketball, golf, football, netball, athletics, and the walking race.

Officials say the results reflect consistent preparation and commitment from athletes, even with many legislators occupied by the political season.

Hon Asuman Basalirwa, Chairperson of the Local Organising Committee, said the performances show the team has handled the pressure well.

“Team Uganda is already out in front. From athletics to women’s volleyball, netball, football, golf, and basketball, we are leading in all completed disciplines. Uganda is still on track to take the 2025 overall title,” says Basalirwa.

Lawmakers also used the moment to highlight the broader gains in sports development. They credited Uganda’s hosting of the CHAN tournament for driving major upgrades to national facilities and urged further investment.

“Hosting the CHAN tournament was a turning point for us. It led to the construction of key sports facilities such as Hoima City Stadium, Akii Bua Memorial Stadium, and Mandela National Stadium. We encourage the government to continue expanding this infrastructure countrywide,” says MP Kankunda.

The games conclude on the 17th, with darts and cricket still in progress. Uganda heads into the final days with a clear advantage and a realistic chance to secure another overall title.
