Uganda finished top of the medal standings at the 15th East African Inter Parliamentary Games after claiming nine gold medals, capping a strong home showing as the tournament closed on Tuesday.
The Games ended with a colourful closing ceremony on Tuesday presided over by the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon Thomas Tayebwa, bringing to an end Uganda’s hosting duties after several days of competition across multiple disciplines.
Uganda’s gold medals came largely from women’s events, including athletics, netball, basketball, volleyball, golf, football, the walking race and darts, highlighting the hosts’ growing strength in women’s sport at regional level.
Women legislators were the driving force behind Uganda’s success, delivering consistent performances that not only lifted the medal count but also set the tone for the entire Games.
Their dominance stood in contrast to the men’s competitions, where Kenya emerged as the strongest side overall, producing solid displays and reaffirming their reputation as a regional sporting powerhouse.
This year’s edition marked a notable shift in format, with no overall champion declared. Instead, organisers placed emphasis on unity, participation and regional cooperation among East African legislatures, a move that was reflected throughout the Games.
With the curtains now drawn on the 15th edition, attention turns to Somalia, which has been confirmed as the host of the 16th East African Inter Parliamentary Games.
