Kyambogo University Vice Chancellor Prof Eli Katunguka has urged the university contingent to remain disciplined and focused as the 20th edition of the Association of Uganda University Sports Games gets underway at Uganda Christian University in Mukono.
Katunguka made the appeal on Wednesday while flagging off a 146 member team made up of players and officials ahead of the Games that start today and run until Tuesday. The contingent includes 123 athletes, with 52 female and 71 male competitors, alongside team officials.
Kyambogo has entered teams across all disciplines on the AUUS programme, including rugby, basketball, volleyball, athletics, woodball, chess, scrabble, netball and handball.
“You are going to the games and you must know that you are carrying the Kyambogo University Flag and must stand by our values which are integrity and discipline,” Katunguka said. “You are representing us and it is not all about winning but making friends, networking and promoting our university values. So, I do not want to hear that Kyambogo used mercenaries,” he added.
Dean of Students Bridget Mugume cautioned athletes and supporters travelling to Mukono to prioritise safety and health during the competition period. “I only beg you to zip up and save your life. However, if you are very stupid not to abstain, use a condom,” Mugume told the players at the flag off ceremony.
Senior sports tutor George Wagoogo said the teams were ready to compete and confident of delivering strong performances.
He acknowledged that Kyambogo will face stiff competition from defending champions Ndejje University, hosts UCU, Victoria University, Kampala International University, Mountains of the Moon University, Kampala University, Gulu University, Busitema University, Nkumba University and Soroti University.
