Uganda secured the Under 20 women team title at the World Athletics Cross Country Championships after placing all four scoring athletes inside the top 10, capping a strong morning for the team in Tallahassee, Florida.
Charity Cherop delivered Uganda’s standout individual result by finishing third to claim the bronze medal in a race dominated by Ethiopia’s Marta Alemayo.
Alemayo led from the opening stages to defend her title, becoming only the fourth woman in history to win back to back U20 crowns, with teammate Wosane Assefa completing an Ethiopian one two.
Despite missing out on individual gold, Uganda’s depth proved decisive in the team standings.
The combined placing of their top four runners earned them 29 points, the same total as Kenya, but enough to secure first place ahead of their East African rivals. Japan finished third with 87 points, while the United States placed fourth.
The result marks another significant achievement for Uganda at the global championships, underlining the country’s strength at junior level and setting a positive tone for the remaining races later in the day.
