Pep Guardiola has called on the EFL to scrap “illogical” eligibility rules that currently bar January signing Marc Guehi from the Carabao Cup final against Arsenal on March 22.
The 25-year-old England defender joined Manchester City from Crystal Palace after their semi-final first leg against Newcastle.
Under current competition rules, players must be registered before the first leg of the semi-final to be eligible for the final.
“It’s pure logic. We pay his salary, he is our player,” Guardiola said. “I don’t understand why he cannot play. You buy a player for a lot of money and he is not able to play for a rule I don’t understand.”
While fellow arrival Antoine Semenyo is eligible because he signed four days before the semi-finals began, Guehi remains sidelined.
City have confirmed they will formally ask the EFL to grant an exception, though Guardiola admitted he expects the request to be rejected.
