Arne Slot has admitted that Liverpool’s current struggle is the most difficult period of his career, confessing that the reigning champions are “not performing to standards.”
Despite a record-equalling 20th title last season and a £450m summer spend, the Reds sit sixth in the Premier League—four points adrift of the Champions League spots.
Liverpool travels to Sunderland on Wednesday without a recognized right-back. Alexander Isak and Giovanni Leoni remain long-term absentees.
Slot noted that while he is unused to consecutive losses, “at Liverpool, even a draw feels like a defeat.”
Slot warned that missing out on the Champions League would make this an “unacceptable season” due to the impact on the club’s operations.
While Slot pointed to “bad luck” and injuries, he remains defiant, insisting his squad can still do “something special” this year.
However, with Brentford breathing down their neck, defeat at the Stadium of Light would further amplify the pressure on the Dutchman.
