SC Villa returned to winning ways with a 2–0 victory over Maroons FC under the floodlights at FUFA Kadiba Stadium on Thursday night, easing pressure in the Uganda Premier League title race.
The 16 time champions had drawn their previous two matches against Lugazi FC and URA FC, results that stalled momentum and left little margin for error. Victory was required to stay within reach of leaders Vipers SC, and Villa delivered a controlled performance from the outset.
Frank Ssebufu, criticised for missed chances in recent games, responded inside two minutes. The forward capitalised on an early opening to give Villa the lead and settle nerves. It was a decisive contribution that set the tone for the evening.
Villa controlled much of the first half and created further opportunities to extend their advantage. Patrick Jonah Kakende saw a goal bound effort cleared off the line by Nicholas Kigozi, while Najib Yiga struck the side netting after a well constructed move.
The hosts maintained their attacking approach after the interval. Substitute Reagan Mpande, introduced for Kakende, forced goalkeeper Matovu into a save with a powerful attempt before the Maroons custodian denied Hassan Mubiru moments later.
Villa secured the result late on. Andrew Otim, brought on in the 84th minute for Ssebufu, made an immediate impact by finishing Mpande’s precise delivery to double the lead and end the contest.
The win moves SC Villa up to fourth on 34 points, four behind Vipers SC, keeping their title ambitions intact. Maroons remain ninth on 18 points as their mid table campaign continues.
