The Chaapa League, powered by Guinness, opened its 11th season on February 28 with one of the biggest opening-day crowds in alumni league history at NEC Grounds in Bugolobi, Kampala.
Thousands turned up for a day that blended competition, reunion and celebration, as different cohorts of Mbarara High School Old Boys reunited on the pitch and in the stands. A section of Mary Hill Old Girls also graced the event, adding to an atmosphere that underlined the league’s growing status among Uganda’s alumni sporting events.
Defending champions Yobo Yobo set the early pace, edging XConvicts 1-0 to launch their title defence. The standout performance of the round came from DingiSwayo, who thrashed Ruharo 6-0 in the most dominant display of the day.
Elsewhere, Bulls Old Timers and Omutaji settled for a 1-1 draw, while Mutakoha secured a narrow 1-0 win over CHOGM. Burdizo claimed a crucial 1-0 victory against TY Sheldon, and Kyangabukama edged Karasande 2-1 in one of the tighter contests. See Far defeated Ezekyeenda 1-0, Rugabo beat Akaju 2-0, SC Rwizi saw off Kataara 1-0, and Unruly impressed with a 3-1 triumph over Sikukulu.
In the women’s division featuring Mary Hill Old Girls, Nihoga capped the opening round with a hard-fought 1-0 win against Holistics, on a day largely defined by slim scorelines.
Off the pitch, music duo Kataleya and Kandle turned the grounds into a concert arena with a performance of their hit song Totta and other crowd favourites.
Guinness complemented the football with branded fan zones, premium beverage experiences and interactive activities that kept revellers engaged throughout the day.
Speaking at the event, Guinness Brand Manager Denise Paula Nazzinda said: “The Chaapa League represents unity, legacy, and the power of bringing people together through football. Guinness is proud to power this platform because it goes beyond the game. Season 11 started on a high note, and we look forward to an even bigger journey ahead.”
The Chaapa League returns on March 28 for Matchday Two.
