Celtic reached the Scottish Cup semi-finals with a 4-2 penalty shootout win over Rangers at Ibrox, after a grueling 0-0 draw dominated by the hosts.
Despite Rangers recording 24 shots to Celtic’s one, Martin O’Neill’s “patched-up” side held firm through 120 minutes.
Both teams had goals disallowed—Daizen Maeda for offside and Rangers’ Emmanuel Fernandez for handball—before misses from James Tavernier and Djeidi Gassama in the shootout allowed Tomas Cvancara to seal the win.
The victory was immediately overshadowed by “ugly scenes” as fans from both clubs swarmed the pitch following the winning penalty.
Police and stewards struggled to contain the pitch invasion as projectiles were thrown, prompting an immediate investigation by the Scottish FA.
While Rangers manager Danny Rohl lamented a result his side “didn’t deserve,” O’Neill praised the “phenomenal courage” of a Celtic team that now heads to Hampden as tournament favorites.
